I think that O'Brien includes those moments of beauty in a novel about war because maybe the novel isn't all about war. It could just take place during a war. It could be about the soldiers lives during the war and their story. Well, and we all know its also about the story behind the things they carry with them to combat. They might have included moments of beauty in the novel so the novel won't be so dark and gloomy and all about war.
